Henry R. Mavity was born in Kentucky, September 10, 1810 and died October 11, 1901. He was married to Susannah Penn in Jefferson County, Indiana, April 20, 1934. She was born January 10, 1810 and died September 14, 1877. His son, John Sam, was a printer and publisher and printed a book commemorating his father's life. The following is condensed from that book:

--Henry Mavity was born in Kentucky in 1810. His father lived in Montgomery County, Kentucky, and later in Shelby County, Kentucky. In 1826 he moved to Ripley County, Indiana. In 1829 Henry went to Lewis County, Kentucky, to go to school to his brother, William Fletcher Mavity. He afterward taught school in Jefferson County, Indiana and at the age of twenty began to preach. In 1834, he married Susannah Penn in Jefferson County, Indiana. Susannah Penn was a daughter of Ephraim Penn and a granddaughter of Benjamin Penn, a Revolutionary soldier. After his marriage he went to Carroll County, Indiana, but the damp climate caused his wife's health to fail. In 1845, they moved to Lewis County, Kentucky, in order to be near Esculapia Springs. He lived here with his sister, Mary, who had married James McCormick. About this time the Christian Board of Missions assigned him to work for them in Lewis, Fleming, Bath, Rowan, Greenup and Boyd Counties, in Kentucky. Besides preaching, he farmed and acquired considerable land in Tarr flat in Fleming and Rowan counties. In 1858, he and his brother-in-law, Pascal Vawter, built a steam saw and grist mill at this place. He was a Union man during the Civil War and both of his sons served in the Union Army. One son, Ephraim, became a captain and was killed in battle. At the beginning of the war Henry's property was assessed at $5,000.00 but when the war closed he had only $500.00. He was forced to leave Kentucky and crossed the river to Portsmouth, Ohio. In the late sixties, he made a preaching tour of Indiana, Illinois, and Missouri, and about 1867, served the Missouri Christian Missionary Board for one year. He returned to Kentucky and served the Kentucky Board of Missions for the Christian Church until 1888. Susannah Penn died in 1877, and the next year he married Ann Harris in Carter County, Kentucky. He retied from active preaching in 1890, with a record of more than three thousand conversions.
