Title: RON BURLA, PEARL NAGATA KILLED AS RUNAWAY JEEP CAUSES 10-CAR ACCIDENT IN KAILUA-KONA
Two people were killed and others were injured when a Jeep Wagoneer went out of control and caused a series of collisions involving 10 vehicles yesterday. Kona police said. The accident happened at 2:55 p.m. on Hawaii Belt Koad at Kain-aliu, they said. Ron Burla, 84, of Kailua-Kona, a passenger in the eighth vehicle, died at the scene. Pearl Kurashige Nagata, 48, of Kealakekua, the driver of the seventh vehicle, died at 10 p.m. at Kona Hospital. The 38-year-old woman who lost control while driving the Jeep received no injuries, said police, who declined to release her name while they continue to investigate. The woman first rear-ended another car, whose driver was then able to steer out of the way. Then she rear-ended another car, forcing it off the road, over a 10-foot embankment. The driver, an 8-year-old boy passenger and a 22-month-old girl all escaped injury. The runaway Jeep next hit a motorcyclist, catching the motorcycle and its driver under the Jeep and dragging them 100 feet before they dislodged. The motorcycle rider was taken to Kona Hospital with multiple injuries including a fractured spine. He is in satisfactory condition, police said. The motorcycle continued moving, hitting two parked vehicles. With the runaway Jeep still moving, another car in front of it, the seventh vehicle tried to speed up, but was struck by the eighth vehicle, which was in the seventh car's lane while passing another car. Those two vehicles hit and locked together for a moment, but spun apart when the Jeep hit them. Burla was killed and Nagata fatally injured in the crash. The driver of Burla's vehicle, a 74-year-old Kailua-Kona woman, was taken to Kona Hospital in satisfactory condition for minor Injuries. The Jeep then hit two parked cars before coming to a stop.
