Attorney. A high-profile criminal lawyer, he will be remembered for such infamous clients as Sam Sheppard, Albert DeSalvo (The Boston Strangler), Patty Hearst and O.J. Simpson. His mother was a teacher, his father was a newspaper advertiser, his parents divorced prior to his teenage years. He attended Kimball Union Academy in New Hampshire and Harvard University, prior to dropping out and enlisting with the United States Marine Corps, with who he served as a fighter pilot. Following his discharge, he attained his law degree from Boston University. Bailey made a name for himself initially when he joined the defense team of George Edgerly who was accused of killing his wife in 1960. In 1961, Bailey took over as defense attorney for Doctor Sam Sheppard who was already convicted of killing his wife years earlier. His efforts enabled Sheppard to be released from prison in 1966. Sheppard's case is widely believed to be the inspiration for the TV series and film "The Fugitive." In 1971, he successfully defended Captain Ernest Medina in his role in the My Lai Massacre (1968). In 1994, he became part of what was referred to as "The Dream Team" of attorneys who successfully defended O.J. Simpson (1995). In 1996, Bailey was held in contempt of court and jailed for a period of time after he refused to turn over shares in regards to a case he was handling. He was eventually disbarred from practicing law in Florida and Massachusetts. During the course of his career, Bailey wrote several publications.
