Alanson Grover was the sixth of ten children born to John Grover and Esther Reed. He was eight years old when he lost his mother. His father remarried and he gained six half-siblings. In 1837 his parents took the eight children still living at home and removed from New York to Illinois.
Alanson and his brother Edwin were the two oldest children left at home, and after riding a side wheeler down the Great Lakes to Chicago, they loaded their belongings on a wagon and set off for Rockford. The wagon was not large enough to carry all their goods, two adults and eight children, so Alanson and Edwin found themselves walking to Rockford.
On June 29, 1843 Alanson married Nancy Van Fleet.
