Joined the 2nd Battalion of the Highland Light Infantry, with service number 34242, and was part of the "Glasgow Pals" Battalion. He died on 1st August 1916, aged 28, from wounds received in action at the Somme, and is buried in Dive Copse British Cemetery, Sailly-le-Sec, north west of Amiens. He was awarded the Victory Medal and the British War Medal, and his effects were passed to his mother Elizabeth
