J.M. HARPER, WELL KNOWN SHADE GAP RESIDENT, PASSES
J.M. Harper, 75, widely known Shade Gap resident, died in the J.C.Blair Memorial Hospital at Huntingdon at 1:30 o'click this Thursday morning, May 17, 1951. He had been in failing health since January 1948, and restricted in his activities. He had been a patient in the hospital since Tuesday. During his two-year illness he had been hospitalized at various times. Mr. Harper was active in many community affairs. He was engaged in the lumber business during his entire life and was well known as the promoter of the famous Shade Gap picnic. He was also closely associated with the Huntingdon County Fair for a number of years. At the time of his death he was president of the Kings Products Corporation of Shade Gap. The deceased was born at Neelyton on April 3, 1876, a son of A.S. and Margaret Jane (Appleby) Harper. He was united in marriage to Miss Belle Robinson of Shade Gap, who survives along with one daughter Helen (Mrs. James Pyle) of Shade Gap. Mr. Harper was the last surviving member of his immediate family. He was a member of the Shade Gap Presbyterian Church. Following their marriage, the Harpers lived in Virginia for five years where he was engaged in the lumber business. In 1915 they moved to Shade Gap and Mr. Harper started in the lumber business there and continued in that occupation until the time of his passing. He started the Harper Memorial Park at Shade Gap in 1936. It is the scene of teh annual Soldiers and Sailors Memorial Picnic. For 25 years he was associated with the Huntingdon County Agricultural Association as director, president and manager of the Huntingdon County Fair. Mr. Harper was a school director at Shade Gap and at the time of his death he was the assessor in that borough. For the past four years he served as president of the Kings Products Corporation at Shade Gap. He was deeply interested in high school bands and worked tirelessly to promote them in the area. Funeral services will be held on Sunday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Ott funeral home in Orbisonia. The Rev. Harry Ferguson, pastor of the Shade Gap Presbyterian Charge, will officiate and interment will be made in the Pine Grove Cemetery at Neelyton. Friends may call at the funeral home after 7 o'clock on Friday evening and until the hour for the funeral service on Sunday.
