Boxer Rebellion Medal of Honor Recipient. Born in Royalton, Pennsylvania, he served as a Private, in the U.S. Marine Corps. During the advance on Tientsin, China, July 13, 1900, Private Mathias distinguished himself in a major engagement holding off enemy troops until reinforced. For meritorious conduct, he was awarded the Medal of Honor on July 19, 1901 and later achieved the rank of Sergeant Major.
