He came to Texas from Frenchlick Township, Orange Co., Indiana with a wagon train in 1852. He enlisted to fight for the CSA but was injured before he ever left Texas and therefore never got to fight with his unit. In Texas, he became a sucsessful farmer and stock raiser. At one time he owned and operated the Davis Mill on Salado Creek in Salado, Texas. He married Sarah Jane Hankins 10 June 1842 in Frenchlick Township
