OBITUARY

Jenny Henkel
DECEMBER 28, 1955 – JANUARY 5, 2013

Jenny Henkel - We lost our sweet, beautiful, and wonderful Jenny on Saturday, January 5, 2013. She was a loving wife, daughter, sister, and friend who will be missed dearly. Jenny was in the prime of her life and career, and was only 57-years-old. But be assured, her spirit will remain with everyone she knew and touched, as well as all those who are the beneficiaries of her commitment to science and her scientific publications.
Jenny was born in Athens, GA, to John Harmon and Sara Ernestine Saucier Henkel on December 28, 1955. She received her Bachelor of Science degree in Biology, followed then by her Master of Science degree in Neuroscience, both from the University of Georgia, Athens, GA. Jenny continued her education in Houston, TX, and received her Doctor of Philosophy in Molecular Virology from Baylor College of Medicine.
At the time of her death Jenny was Assistant Research Professor at Weill Medical College of Cornell, New York, NY. She was also Assistant Research Professor in the Methodist Neurological Institute, Assistant Research Professor of Neurosciences for Biomedical Imaging Science, and Assistant Member in The Methodist Hospital Research Institute, all in Houston, TX. Jenny was a scientist's scientist and dedicated to improving the health and wellbeing of others. As her Department Chairman, Dr. Stanley H. Appel, recently said, "We've all lost a great colleague and friend, and a brilliant scientist, whose accomplishments were on a meteoric rise."
Jenny is survived by her father, who lives in Athens, her sister Margaret, who lives in Midlothian VA, and her husband David R. Beers, in Houston TX. Jenny was not only David's beloved wife, but his best friend on earth, and scientific colleague. They were often seen around The Methodist Hospital talking in depth about their science and future avenues of studies. Jenny was preceded in death by her mother and three of her sisters, Wendolyn Elizabeth, Sally Lee, and Pamela Ann.
Jenny was tremendously gifted with her hands and enjoyed carpentry, home design, and gardening. She was continuously modifying the design and decor of her and David's home. Jenny loved being outside, meticulously tending to the landscape of her home.
The funeral service and celebration of Jenny's life were conducted Saturday, January 12th, at the Athens First United Methodist Church, 327 North Lumpkin Street, Athens, GA.
