Daniel Benson was born May 1785 in Glocester, Providence, Rhode Island to Elihu Benson and Huldah Brown. Although Daniel's father, Elihu, was made a freeman of Danby, Vermont in 1778, the family didn't settle in Vermont until after Elihu completed his Revolutionary War service.

Daniel married first Bilah Benson, his cousin on 4 Oct 1807 in Thompson, Connecticut. He married his second wife, Sarah C. Rogers on 3 Oct 1830 in Tinmouth, Vermont.
FHL microfilm 0029000, Index to Marriage Records, Book CR, p. 245.

The first marriage appears to have been childless. The second marriage resulted in four children: Allen, Joel, Mary and Elizabeth.
