Jerry Smith

COMMERCE. Okla. — Jerry David Smith, 57, 410 N. Mickey Mantle Blvd., died at 1 p.m. Sunday at his home after an apparent heart attack.

Mr. Smith was born July 12, 1936, in the Douthat community south of Picher. He had lived in the Miami and Commerce areas all his life.

He had been a lieutenant detective for the Miami Police Department for 13 years and had been head jailer for the Ottawa County Sheriff's Department for 2 years. He owned and operated J.D. Smith's Pawn Shop in Commerce since 1985. He was a member of Southeast Baptist Church, Commerce, and a veteran of the U.S. Navy.

He married Phyllis Burris on Oct. 18, 1954, in Commerce. She survives.

Additional survivors include a son (sic) [nephew], Ricky Don Tinsley, [Jr.], Commerce; a daughter, Jo Dawn Foster, Miami; his mother, Juanita Tinsley, Commerce; and four grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at Hillcrest [Hill Crest] Cemetery, Galena, Kan. The Rev. Clyde Stilley will officiate.

Pallbears will be Jimmie Bayliss, Steve Cline, Russell Orchid, George Couch, Louis Mathia and Ted Londo.

Military rites will be conducted by the Northeast Oklahoma Veteran's Funeral Detail.

Arrangements are under the direction of Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Picher.

COMMERCE, Okla. — Dorothy Juanita Tinsley, 84, 1120 Timbertree St., died at 5:25 p.m. Thursday at a nursing home in Commerce after a long illness.

Mrs. Tinsley was born March 22, 1911, at Purcell, Mo.

She lived in the Commerce area most of her life. She worked at the Kansas Army Ammunition Plant at Parsons during World War II. She was a homemaker and a member of the First Christian Church, Commerce.

Her husband, Walter Tinsley, died in 1973.

Survivors include a sister, Lila Naydeen Fleischhacker, St. Paul, Minn.; two grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at GAR Cemetery, Miami. The Rev. Wayne Wall will officiate.

The family will receive friends from 5 to 6 p.m. Sunday at Paul Thomas Funeral Home, Miami.

Rickey Don Tinsley, 19 a lifelong resident of Commerce died at 7:10 a. m. Saturday in St. John's hospital, Tulsa, of injuries received Friday night in a motorcycle-pickup truck collision at Picher.

Tinsley was headed west on East A street when his small motorcycle and a pickup driven by Alva Donald Burke, 37, Picher, collided at the intersection of East A and Mable streets. Alfred Stallion was riding with Burke. They were not injured. [PHOTO]

Tinsley suffered head injuries and multiple fractures of his left leg. He was not wearing a helmet. After emergency treatment at Miami Baptist hospital, he was transferred to St. John's, Tulsa.

Investigators said the eastbound pickup truck was making a left turn from A street at the time of the collision at 8:45 p.m.

Officers participating in the investigation included Picher Police Chief Ladell Morgan, Highway Patrolman Vernon Anderson and District Attorney Thomas H. May.

The death was Ottawa county's seventh traffic fatality of the year and the fourth since Memorial Day, May 30. The county's traffic toll for all of 1968 was seven.

Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Susan Tinsley of Commerce; an infant son, Rickey Don, Jr.; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Walt Tinsley of Commerce, and a half brother, Jerry Smith, of Miami.

Arrangements will be announced by the Jim Thomas funeral home of Commerce.

Tinsley's death and that of two others raised Oklahoma's 1969 traffic toll to 391, compared with 335 at the same time last year.

Jack Edwards, 46, an El Paso, Tex., truck driver was killed Saturday when his truck collided with a car on the Bailey Turnpike just south of the Walters toll gate.
