In the death of Mrs. Elizabeth Rentchler, St. Clair loses one of its oldest residents, one who was esteemed and loved by a large circle of friends and acquaintances. She was a native of Pennsylvania and was born June 25, 1804. Her parents were John H. and Elizabeth Rickey [Rockey] Baker. She was married to Jacob Rentchler in the year 1825, in Pennsylvania, and in the year 1837, the family removed to Illinois, locating at Jacksonville in Morgan county. They remained there but a few years when they came to this county, settling a few miles east of Belleville on a farm, upon a portion of which the villiage of Rentchler Station is located.
Mr. Rentchler was a millwright by trade, and in his native state operated a saw and grist mill and also carried on a store. Upon his arrival in this county he engaged in agricultural pursuits and also bought and sold and traded in livestock. He was very successful in all his undertakings, and at the time of his death, which occurred in 1853, was the owner of 800 or more acres of fine farming land in this county.
The deceased was the mother of ten children, three of whom survive, viz.:
Jacob Rentchler, now residing at Los Angeles, Cal.
Mrs. Maria Richardson, wife of James A. Richardson, of this county [St. Clair Co., Ill.]
Mrs. Elizabeth Hobbs, wife of Rev. James Hobbs, residing at Decatur, Ill.
Mrs. Rentchler was brought up in the faith of the Lutheran Church and was a warm-hearted Christian woman, always giving of her means to the support of the Gospel. With her own means she erected a neat little church building at Rentchler Station, dedicating it to the worship of God, and all Christian bodies, of whatever denomination, were privileged to hold services therein.
The funeral took place at 1:30 p.m., on Sunday, May 28th, services being held at the house by Rev. Samuel Walker, of Carlyle, Ill., who forty-five years ago had been a guest in the home of the Rentchler family, and who ever since that time, had always been regarded and held in high esteem by the subject of this sketch. There was a large attendance of friends and acquaintances from far and near, to pay their last tribute of respect to the departed one. The floral tributes were many and beautiful. During the services a number of beautiful hymns were sung by the granddaughters, the selections being favorite hymns with Mrs. Rentchler. Six of the grandsons of the deceased served as pallbearers. The interment was made in Green Mount Cemetery, the remains being followed to their last resting place by a large concourse of sorrowing relatives and friends.
