People who knew C.C. Slaughter's second wife and heard that she had come from Plymouth, Massachusetts, fancied she must have been born on Plymouth Rock, so completely was she in the New England tradition. She was a music teacher and met the Colonel through his sisters who were her pupils. Impressed with the Plymouth lady, Colonel Slaughter, after the fashion of elegant gentlemen of his day dyed his mustache and set about courting her. When, after his second family was growing up, the problem of property settlement between his two sets of children arose, the Colonial simply divided what he had between them and his wife and set out to making a second fortune for himself.
