Business leader, Philanthropist. Educated at Georgetown. He was first in his class the four years he was there. He enlisted in the First Virginia Infantry - CSA. He was wounded and captured at the Battle of Williamsburg. He was exchanged, but the wound to his right wrist was so severe, that it prevented him from further field service. He was appointed lieutenant of ordinance of the reserve corps of Richmond and served as such to the end. After the War he began his career as a lawyer. He became a leader in the railroad industry. He left millions of dollars to charity. His home, Maymont, is now a museum.
