George Willis Fondren Sr.

COLUMBIA - A memorial service for George Willis Fondren, Sr. of Columbia, S.C., will be held Saturday, March 5, 2016, at 10:00 a.m. in the Mausoleum chapel at Greenlawn Memorial Park on Garners Ferry Road, with military honors. He passed away February 2, 2016. He was born November 7, 1927, in Drew, Miss., of Choctaw-Cherokee heritage. He was predeceased by his parents, Lorenzo Dowell Fondren and Susie Kendrick Fondren of Memphis, Tenn. Mr. Fondren was a veteran of WWII and a recipient of the Purple Heart, Bronze Star, five Combat Stars, Southeast Asian Theatre. After leaving the military, he joined the police force in Mississippi. He was the first motorcycle cop and helped design their uniforms. He also became known as "Dennis the Menace," He also kept his love for policing while living in Memphis, Tennessee and Lancaster, S.C. While in the Air Force and on the police force, he trained military and police dogs. He became a Mason and was a constable for 15 years. In his younger years, he won dance contests, and danced up until his 90th birthday. His favorite dancing partner was his sweetheart, Martha Hallbick. He loved meeting and talking with anyone who would listen, and was an avid storyteller. He was told by his wife, Nell, that he would talk to a tree, if it would listen. He loved his children, plants, animals, creating works of art with turquoise, loved the military and being a policeman. Being outside with nature and bird watching was a joy for him. He had a quick wit, loved playing pranks and everyone was his "cuz." Survived by: daughters, Deborah F. Wooldridge and Bridgette F. Reynolds of Lexington, S.C., Kim F. Ballard of Columbia, S.C.; son, "Corky" George Willis Fondren, Jr. (Jeannette) of North Carolina; grandchildren, "Trae" George Willis Fondren III, Holly and Blake Fondren of North Carolina, Amy Norris, "Robby" Robert J. Norris, Jr. (Alexis), and Ashley Ballard of Columbia, S.C.; great-granddaughter, Jada Norris of Lexington, S.C.
