Gary "Skip" Christian Hursh, age 85, passed away peacefully on Monday, February 8, 2021, at his Rocklin, California, home where he had lived with his wife, Sarah "Sally", since July 2019.
He was cared for by his loving wife and daughters at home in the last twelve months of his life, per his wishes and due to the Covid pandemic. Gary was surrounded by those he loved each day over the past year.
He is survived by his wife, Sally, of 60+ years; his three daughters, Kristin Hursh Smith, Trude Hursh (Scott Ensor) and Erin Cord (Rob Cord); his four grandchildren, Bryan Smith, Brett Smith, Broderick "Brody" Cord, Addyson Cord; and his dear friend Robert "Rob" Hoyt.
He is pre-deceased by his mother, LaVanche Hursh; his father, Vernon Hursh; his maternal aunt, Eileen Wells (Clyde Wells); and his maternal grandparents, George and Adelaide Christian.
Gary grew up on his family's ranch, the Christian Ranch, outside Arbuckle, and attended schools in Arbuckle including Pierce High School. Upon graduation from Pierce High School, he attended college at UC Berkeley. While at UC Berkeley, he enjoyed representing Cal as a member of the university's crew team.
Gary left UC Berkeley before graduation to enlist in the United States Army, where he served in Korea for several years before being honorably discharged.
Gary later met his future wife Sally, who graduated from UC Davis with a teaching degree. They married in July, 1960 and moved into their newly built home on Circle Drive in Arbuckle. Gary and Sally raised three daughters while living in Arbuckle. They lived in Arbuckle until 1992 but later moved to Lake Almanor, California, where they enjoyed their lakefront home and spending time with family and friends. Gary and Sally later moved to their home in Grass Valley where they lived until moving to Rocklin to be nearer to their three daughters in July, 2019.
Gary was well-liked by those who knew him. He loved to laugh, was generous to all, was fun-loving and had a true servant's heart. Gary worked and played hard, but had an incredible work ethic, which he passed on to his three daughters.
He was a long-standing member of the Arbuckle Fire Department and the Arbuckle Golf Club, as well as a member of the Lion's Club of Arbuckle. Although Gary worked hard all of his life, he found time to volunteer through the fire department and with the Lion's Club to mow the community park in Arbuckle each week.
He loved to play jokes on others from an early age, always accompanied by his quick smile and the flash of his brilliant blue eyes. Gary loved listening to jazz music from the Big Band era, dancing with his wife Sally to their favorite tunes, snow skiing with his friends in Tahoe, playing and watching tennis, and water skiing on the Sacramento River and at Lake Almanor.
One of Gary's favorite sayings was, "Don't ever just give 100%, give 110% in everything you do." He exemplified this belief in all aspects of his life.
Gary will be missed by his wife and loving daughters, but also by his many friends and classmates.
A celebration of Gary's life will be held at a later date as organized by his family. Donations can be made to any organization that honors veterans and their causes, to hospice, or to a charity of the donor's choice.
