~~Quincy Daily Whig (Quincy, IL) 21 May 1872, Tue
Fatal Accident: Mention was made in yesterday's Whig of a serious accident befallen Mr H S Byington, of this city, while on a visit to Galesburg and we regret to announce this morning that the accident has proved fatal. The circumstances are thus related to us: On Saturday afternoon, while returning from a visit in the country, accompanied by Mr Charles Atwood, of Galesburg, and riding behind a pair of fast horses, the animals became frightened at an obstruction in the road and commenced prancing; their action loosened the outside tugs which were not secured by "keepers" and there being no "safety strap" on the whiffle trees they turned sufficiently to let the pole fall out of the neck yoke to the ground. At this juncture, Mr Atwood caught hold of one of the front wheels to prevent the carriage running upon the horses, but they started suddenly threw him out and at once made down the street at break-neck speed.

Mr Byington in the meantime guiding them through the intricacies of the thoroughfare, which was crowded with vehicles. All went well with him until coming to a street crossing which was made of plank and Mr Byington was thrown with great violence out of the vehicle to the ground, striking at a distance of 39 feet from the point where the carriage pole hit the crossing. Mr Byington was immediately picked up and removed to Mr Atwood's nearby.

His injuries were necessarily fatal, his skull being fractured and his neck broken, not-withstanding which he lingered in an unconscious condition until five minutes past 12 o'clock Sunday night, more than 30 hours past the injury.

His body was brought down to Quincy yesterday morning, and taken to his late residence, corner of Seventh and Spring Streets, where the funeral will take place this afternoon.

Mr Byington, who was about 52 years of age, has long been a resident of this city and respected and beloved by all who knew him.

He leaves a wife and two children.
