Born on July 9, 1927 in Amsterdam she was the daughter of Percy and Bertha Haner Ackerman.
A lifelong area resident, Betty attended city schools and worked for a time for Mohawk Carpet Mills and was a homemaker.
She enjoyed crafts and crossword puzzles. She briefly moved to Arizona to be with her son, but moved back to Amsterdam in 2006.
On May 29, 1948 she was united in marriage to Floyd A. Newkirk. That union lasted nearly 46 years until his passing on May 25, 1994.
Her loving family includes her five children, Ronald Newkirk of Mesa, AZ, Wayne Newkirk of Amsterdam, Linda Wood of Ft. Hunter, Georgia Barbagelata (Mike Konik) of Amsterdam and Diana Vitus (Arthur Boutell) of Amsterdam; one brother, Kenneth Ackerman of Amsterdam; two sisters, Florence McClary of Johnstown and Emma Collins of Amsterdam; ten grandchildren; four great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Interment will take place in Pine Gove Cemetery, Tribes Hill.
