Following his father's death in 1968, Reggie and his sisters were raised by their mother's second husband, Ernest A. Lawson (1929-2004).
Reggie passed away on the 28 January 2002 after a long battle with illness. He was buried in Orange Forest Lawn Cemetery, where his maternal grandparents, A.G. Creech (1910-1985) and Ima (Balla) Creech (1910-1998), were also buried.
His headstone is inscribed:
"In Loving Memory of
Son, Brother
Reginald D. Etheridge
July 27, 1961
Jan. 28, 2002
Stand for a Few Moments Beside Me
and Remember Only the Best."
