Lois Thurman (1900-1966)
Lois Thurman was born July 5, 1900 probably in Tennessee. The US census show TN (3 times), but it's Texas per daughter Lois Johnson's and Preston Phillips birth certificate (BC). The Stair family record says Waco, Tenn. Berta Lee's BC says Tenn. Preston's BC had Nashville, but was over struck with Commerce TX. Lois' travel journal 1945-47 says Texas.
Lois' parents ran a hotel in Commerce, Texas (a big rail road town) and met Herbert Cooley who was working on the railroad. Lois had a tough and poor life picking cotton. They married on Dec. 7, 1916 in Los Angeles and later Herbert's job transferred him to Oakland, CA.
They quickly started a family in 1919 having 6 children. In 1925 she divorced Herbert Cooley and since they were poor gave up all the kids to the Lady's Relief Home Society on 1635 45th St, Oakland. The youngest, Berta, was just 1 1/2 years and Molly 3. Lois and Belva were older. Berta and Mollie stayed there until Mollie was 12 (1934) and then they were raised by Frank and Mavis Hagberg in San Jose. Lois and Belva left the orphanage earlier in 1929 and moved back in with their Mother and new husband, Roy Philips.
Lois then went through various marriages: Next Albert Jack Clark, married 1926, one child Albert, born Sep 1927, who was then put in the St. Anges Baby Home during Dec 1928. Albert died in 1929 in a plane crash (unconfirmed).
Next she married Roy Phillips in 1929 producing 2 more children, Preston in 1933 and Francis in 1935; Then Peter Enns, married 1943 to 1945; 1947 it was Irwin Southard briefly, finally Charles Curtis marriage Aug 1951.
Lois and Charles lived out their days in Grass Valley CA, with Lois dying in 1956 and Charles in 1966. Lois is buried in the Greenwood Memorial cemetery in Nevada City with her mother Mae buried not far away.
