VENERABLE CITIZEN SUCCUMBS - John Ramirez, One of Community's Pioneers, Passes Into Eternity. - John Ramirez, one of Donaldsonville's oldest and best known citizens, died at his home in Conway street Tuesday afternoon at 4 o'clock, following an illness of two months' duration. Mr. Ramirez, ("Pa John," as he was lovingly termed by nearly everyone who knew him), was 74 years and 8 months of age at the time of his death, and in his quiet, unassuming way, had been a prominent figure in the affairs of this community all of his life. He was formerly a member of the Donaldsonville police force, and for some years past had served as constable of the fourth ward justice court. In both of these capacities, as well as in every other obligation of life, he acquitted himself with credit and ability, being faithful, courageous and impartial in the discharge of his duties, and commanding at all times the unqualified respect, confidence and esteem of the entire public. He was also the lessee of the municipal market, having controlled this franchise for several years past.

The funeral took place Wednesday at 3 p. m., with services and interment in the Catholic church and cemetery. Persons from all walks of life attended the obsequies, for "Pa John" was revered by everyone and there was a general outpouring of men, women and children to pay the last tribute of respect to his memory.

Besides his venerable wife he is survived by four daughters, Mrs. Dominique Cooper of Napoleonville, Mrs. A. J. Gauthreaux of Shreveport, Mrs. A. LeBlanc of New Orleans, and Mrs. Camille Hernandez of Belle Alliance; five sisters, Mrs. Amedee Breaux and Mrs. Clovis Breaux of New Orleans, Mrs. Napoleon Martinez of Darrow, Mrs. Emanuel Alleman of Hohen Solms, and Mrs. Antoine Chauvin of Plattenville; two brothers, Vives Ramirez of White Castle, and Paul Ramirez of Donaldsonville, and twenty-two grandchildren and fourteen great-grandchildren.

He leaves his family the inestimable legacy of an unstained name, which is better than great riches, and the precious memories of a home life enriched by his unvarying kindness and devotion. The heartfelt sympathy of the entire people among whom his life was spent is extended to the loved ones bereaved by his summons into eternity.
