She attended Syracuse University as part of the Cadet Nurse Corp during WWII, and held various RN nursing positions over her lifetime, all of which emphasized how to stay well. Her lively spirit, sense of humor, and compassion resonated with people while working as a school nurse, a hospital nurse for OSU, a workers' compensation specialist, and a wellness coordinator in a senior independent living community outside of Washington, DC. Upon retirement, Shirley became a certified water exercise instructor focused on teaching seniors the importance of remaining active. She was as they say - "a force of nature" in her wellness education mission.
Shirley embraced life and lived it with zest. She was a talented seamstress who created many of her own clothes in addition to those of her children. She eagerly kept abreast of politics and Syracuse basketball and lacrosse. She nurtured friendships with people of all ages. She effortlessly defied the advancing years and her children's friends frequently commented "I hope to age as gracefully as your mother".
Above all else, Shirley was a devoted mother. Her children are grateful for the high standards she set for them and seek to follow her example in their everyday lives. Her fortitude is ingrained in them and they hope to impart it to their children.
