Mary was one of the many children of John D. Boland, 1853-1912, and Ellen Woods, 1855-1912, both of Ireland. Mary married her childhood friend Stephen Francis O'Neill, a Major League Baseball star, in Manhattan, on August 20, 1914. Together, Mary and Steve raised four daughters, two of whom married Major League Baseball players:
