James Thomas Flowers was born on September 22, 1881 in Clarksville, Texas, the son of Sam Flowers and Susie E (Dorris) Flowers.

He had lived in Nashville, Tennessee for more than 50 years, and he was married in 1911 to Willie Mae Rice (1887–1968).

James had worked in the maintenance department of Peabody College for 21 years and retired about 1959.

Living on Pierce Road in Madison, Davidson County, Tennessee, James was 80 years old, married and had pulmonary TB when he died of myocarditis on June 30, 1962 at Mid-Tennessee Tuberculosis Hospital.

Survivors included his wife Willie, daughters Mrs Alta Mae Morehead of Rockwood, Tennessee, Mrs Mary Ella Purdom, Mrs Dorothy Belle Smith and Mrs Pauline Elizabeth Hyde of Madison, Tennessee and Mrs Nellie Vincent of Nashville, sister Mrs R T Jones of White House, Tennessee, brother Clarence Flowers of Nashville, fifteen grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Funeral Services were held on July 2nd at Madison Funeral Home, and burial was in Spring Hill Cemetery, Nashville.
