"The Tomb of Dame Elizabeth Periam

This is the church's only effigy, and is a very fine and unusually
restrained example of 16th century monumental sculpture —
which can be all to frequently over ornate.
It is executed in black marble and alabaster, and shows signs
of once having been richly painted. It commemorates Lady
Elizabeth Periam; born Elizabeth Bacon, she was the sister of
Francis Bacon, the great philosopher and early scientist, best

Inherited wealth to fund a fellowship and scholarships at

Henley, in the Chantry House, next to this church. This school
eventually became the town's Grammar School (now Henley

Translation of the memorial inscription:

To the sacred memory of the most worthy Dame Eliza[beth] Periam, widow.
Wife of, firstly, Robert Doyley, next, Henry Nevile, and, lastly, William Periam, knight.
[She] founded a school in this town for the education of the poor children of the neighbourhood, and at Balliol College in the famous Oxford University [she] endowed one fellowship and two scholarships.
She died on the third of May in the year of the Lord one thousand and six hundred and twenty-one.
