Death of 'Aunt Dora' Comes as Shock to Valley Island

Wailuku, Maui, Oct. 24 - Funeral services were held Monday afternoon for Mrs. Randal (Aunt Dora) von Tempsky, 74, of Kula, who died in her sleep in the early morning hours of Sunday.
The Reverend C. Fletcher Howe of the Protestant Episcopal Church of the Good Shepherd conducted the services at home.
Mrs. von Tempsky died peacefully in her sleep early Sunday morning at her home in Kula.
News of her passing came as a shock to the Maui community and friends throughout the territory, where she was widely known, for despite her years, Mrs. von Tempsky was very active and took a leading part in Maui social life. Last week she was an interested spectator in the 22nd Maui county fair, and on Saturday night she was a guest at a party at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Allen of Wailuku.
It was after going home and retiring for the night after the party that she died in her sleep.
Mrs. von Tempsky was Dora Dowsett before her marriage. She was born May 18, 1865, in Honolulu, the daughter of Samuel H. Dowsett and Mary McKibbin Dowsett. She was educated in Honolulu and then went to finishing school in Brussels, Belgium, where she studied music and French.
Upon her return to Honolulu she was married August 16, 1892, to Randal von Tempsky of Maui, and came to the Valley Isle as a bride. Mr. von Tempsky was owner and manager of the Erehwon Ranch, and following his death six years after their marriage she continued to make her home at the ranch with their two children.
These two children, a daughter, Mrs. Alexa von Tempsky Zabriskie, and a son, Robert (Boy) von Tempsky, also survive.
Mrs. von Tempsky was one of Maui's leading hostess, and her hospitable Kula home was the scene of much entertaining of Mauians as well as visitors from other islands and the mainland.
