John's father, William Shields, formed Second Frederick County Militia Company in Emmitsburg, Maryland, during the Revolutionary War. In 1776, Capt. William Shields' company was assimilated into the Third Battalion of the Maryland Militia under the command of Col. Jacob Good. John Knight Shields served in the Revolutionary War as an Ensign in his father's company. He married Mary McCollum, who lived for 51 years from February 18, 1769, until April 20, 1820. They had seven children: William Henry, Henry D. Jane, Nancy, Hester, Mary, and Eliza. Little information is available about this family. John lived to the age of 77, passing away on January 23, 1833, in Frederick County, Maryland.
