Constança de Noronha (1395 - January 26, 1480), was the 1st Duchess of Braganza, by marriage. When the Duke of Bragança died in 1461, the Duchess, a widow and without descendants, decided to take the habit of the Third Order of São Francisco, to live until her last days in recollection and penance. She frequented the Church of the Convent of São Francisco de Guimarães, located in terms of its properties in the town of Guimarães. To this religious institution she donated the Fountain of Dogs and also offered the expenses for the construction of the chancel. It was in the Convent of São Francisco de Guimarães that she chose to be buried in 1480. Her epitaph reads: "Alphonsi Ducis Hoc Conjux Constança Noronha Conditur in Tumulo".

After becoming a widow, she also transformed her residence, the Paço dos Duques de Bragança in Guimarães, into a kind of hostel for those in need of charity, a place that, according to tradition, was where she personally took care of the sick and disadvantaged. For her activities of help and altruism, she has been considered a saint within the community.
