Inês Peres was a lover and mistress of the Master of the Order of Avis and future King João I of Portugal, mother of the 1st Duke of Braganza, Afonso I, the 5th Countess of Arundel, Beatrice and Branca, who died in infancy. Due to her origin, she could not marry the father of her children who married the English princess Philippa of Lancaster on February 2, 1387. Queen Philippa took charge of the education of Afonso and Beatrice and this could have led to Inês entering the Convent of Santos-o-Velho, in Lisbon, of which she became commander and where she was probably buried.
