Blackman Killed in  Log Train Wreck
Georgiana, Ala., Oct. 2

Jettie Blackman, son of Frank Blackman of Route 2, died at Watson infirmary Wednesday morning at 4 o'clock.

He was in the cab of a log engine on the Crenshaw line of the W. T. Lumber Co.'s road some 7 miles east of Pigeon Creek when a trestle some 10 or 15 ft. high gave way and the locomotive and two cars of logs went down.

Engineer Owen Taylor escaped out through the window as the engine turned over on the fireman's side. Fireman Fletcher McCray was found under the tank, possibly smothered rather than crushed to death.

Jettie had both legs fastened between boiler and a log beneath. He tried to cut his legs off to get loose from the hot, heavy boiler when the engineer took his knife away from him. He then begged the engineer to chop them off with an axe.

Some 5 hours later he was rescued and carried to hospital. His suffering was beyond description, but only twice did he give way to the pain and frequently drank water and once smoked a cigarette.

He told his parents that while he was under the boiler he had made peace with God. He talked freely and just before the end he closed his eyes and folded his hands and said "Mother I am going home to glory."

He was a member of Brushey Creek church and 24 years of age and had been married a year.

Rev. R. L. Shell officiated at Brushey Creek Thursday.

Jettie married Lula May Rigsby on October 29, 1924 and his son Jettie Lee Blackmon, his surviving son, was born October 8, 1925.

In 1910 census for James Franklyn "Frank" Blackman lists son Lee J Blackmon Jr, age 9. The census was taken 14 May 1910 so Jettie has a birth month later than 14 May 1901, but before October 2, 1925 when he was killed, as the news clip says he was 24. His marriage license says he was born in 1903. On 1900 and 1910 Census, family was living at Georgiana, Butler County, Alabama.

The 1920 census has Lettie Lee as 18 year old daughter listed (error).
