Well-Known Citizen of Matthews Passes Away--Funeral This Morning at 10 O'Clock.
Mr. John W. Abernethy died suddenly at his home near Matthews Sunday about noon. A few hours prior to his death he was in the full possession of his normal faculties and seemed to be enjoying good health. Without any premonition whatever he was taken ill and in a few hours passed away. Mr. Abernethy was 77 years of age and is survived by seven or eight children. One son is Col. H. L. Abernethy, of River Bend, who is well-known in the county. The funeral will take place at Matthews this morning at 10 o'clock. The services will be in charge of Rev. D. M. Austin. The interment will be in the Matthews Cemetery.
Mr. Abernethy was a strong man, mentally and physically. For forty-odd years he was an itinerant Methodist minister, working among the people and doing much good. Less than ten years ago he joined the Matthews Baptist church, of which church he was a member when he died.
