SAMUEL METIER was born in Clearmont County, Ohio, Oct. l6, l826 and he died at his home in Garden Grove, Iowa, Nov. 9th, age 78 years and 23 days. He was the oldest son of WILLIAM and SARA (MOYER) METIER. At the age of l4 he moved with his parents from Ohio to Vermillion County, Ill, where he grew to manhood. On January 29th, l849, he was united in marriage to JULIA DOUGLASS, eldest daughter of CYRUS and RUBY (BLOSS) DOUGLASS, who were early settlers of Illinois. The union was blessed by the birth of ten children, one of whom died in infancy. The remaining nine all grew to manhood and womanhood. They are: W.C., of Centerville, Wash., J.L., of Leon, LAURA and RUBY, of Cal., DOCIA STILES, of Garden Grove, L.D., of Red Lodge, Mont., A.H. and G.E., of Weldon, Iowa, and JOSEPH PEARL, now deceased.
MR. METIER moved to Garden Grove, Iowa, in l854 and has since lived on his farm and town property here, making him one of the old settlers of the county. In the year l888 occurred the death of his wife. On Aug. 5, l900 he was joined in holy wedlock to MRS. KATHREN (KELSO) ROSS, whose death occurred in Feb. of last year. MR. METIER was a man of excellent character, kindly disposition and was characterized by a generous, helpful spirit, always showing his willingness to help in every good work. He was a member of the Masonic Order who had charge of the services and hold him in loving remembrance, and a host of friends mourn his departure.
The funeral was held from the residence Friday at 11 a.m., Rev. E.C. Newland, of Murray, preaching the sermon. Interment was at the Metier Cemetery, north of Garden Grove.
