Monument Cemetery was used for the burial of Confederate as well as Union troops and civilians until it was designated a national cemetery in 1864 and renamed Chalmette National Cemetery. Some Confederate burials in Monument Cemetery were removed to the Confederate Monument burial site in Greenwood Cemetery in New Orleans under the auspices of the Ladies Benevolent Association of Louisiana.
