John McKee migrated to the North Carolina from Scotland in 1812 just in time for the War of 1812, it appears by records. He moved from North Carolina to Shelbyville, Illinois where he remained until his death. He married first Unity Warren in 1812. And then, Barbara A. Smart in 1818.

Unity Warren McKee's (wife of John McKee) grave was relocated from the old Louisville Cemetery (Cutler Cemetery) to the Louisville Memorial Cemetery. as part of the Tennessee Valley Cemetery Relocation Project, Files 1933-1990. Most of the stones were either lost or destroyed. Some were propped against a wall in the new cemetery. John Franklin McKee was probably one of them.
