Tom developed complications over time from serious injuries sustained in a severe beating he suffered from his Grandfather, Ben Allen. These complications led to his hospitalization at Central State Hospital, of which has a gruesome history. He spent a few years in the hospital until his death. It was assumed the family had no means of being able to bring him home for burial so he was buried at the hospital cemetery. The hospital closed in the early 1960's and changed ownership several times into the the 1970's. Some point during this period, any grave markers remaining were removed by a new owner, making it impossible for relatives of patients buried there to locate the grave of their loved one.
