Watt Carter, 86, of Canton Hill Dr., a retired educator, died of heart failure Friday at his home. Services are 2 p.m. Monday at Antioch Baptist Church in Bruce with burial in the church cemetery. Visitation is 1 to 4 p.m. today at Nowell-Flippin Funeral Home in Ridgeland.
Mr. Carter was a Calhoun County native. He was a graduate of Calhoun County Agricultural High School and Mississippi State University, where he received a bachelor's degree in agricultural. He taught vocational agriculture 25 years, was a school administrator seven years, and served two terms as a state land commissioner.
He was Grand Master of Grand Lodge of Mississippi in 1952 and Grand Lecturer of Grand Lodge of Mississippi from 1954-1994. He was a member of Mississippi Agriculture Teachers Hall of Fame, Grand Lodge Scholarship Committee, Board of Directors of Mississippi Agriculture Museum, Board of Aldermen for the town of Vardaman, First Baptist Church of Vardaman and Colonial Heights Baptist Church in Jackson.
Survivors include his wife, Katie; sons, Joe Jon Carter and Phil Carter, both of Jackson, brother, Fredric Carter of Sallisaw, OK and two grandchildren.
Memorials may be made to the Grand Lodge Endowment Fund, c/o Grand Lodge of Mississippi, P. O.Bx 1030, Meridian, MS, 39302 or Colonial Heights Baptist Church, 5708 Old Canton Road, Jackson, MS 39211.
