Harriet "Hattie" Travers was born September 1, 1849 in Baltimore, Maryland. The daughter of William Riggin Travers (1819-1887) co-founder and first president of Saratoga Racecourse at Saratoga Springs, New York, and the first president of the New York Athletic Club. The Travers Stakes, America's oldest major race for Thoroughbred horses, was named in his honor. Hattie's mother Maria Louisa Johnson (1827-1893) was the daughter of United States Senator from Maryland, Reverdy Johnson.

Hattie married George Richmond Fearing (1839-1920) September 1, 1869 in Newport Rhode Island. George and Hattie built a home there called "The Orchard" (Still standing today. ) They split their time between their Newport home and their home at 998 Fifth Avenue in Manhattan. She lived 20 years in France returning to the United States about the time World War I broke out.

They had one son George Richmond Fearing Jr. (1871-1956). Hattie was very interested in Philanthropic activities. She spent the last years of her life at the Hotel Victoria , Back Bay, where she passed away March 3, 1931. She was entered at the Travers Family plots at the Island Cemetery in Newport Rhode Island.
