Per the Chambers County Deed Records, Vol. 17, Pg. 349, July 10,1923:
"My name is Elizabeth Simms and I am about eighty years of age. I am the widow of Hiram Toran who died about 1877. Hiram Toran, my first husband, bought eight acres of the sixteen acres tract now known as the Simms Place from Mr. Van Padells (sic) [Van Pradelles], and eight acres from W. Smith about fifty-six years ago or about two or three years after the Civil War. When my first husband, Hiram Toran, bought the sixteen acres of land, now known as the Simms place, we erected thereon a home where we resided until his death which occurred about the year 1877. In addition to building a home, we fenced the land and it has been fenced continuously from that day to this. There were no children born of my marriage to Hiram Toran and about nine months after my first husband's death, I married Alfred Simms. This marriage took place about the year 1878 [marriage record Vol. A, Pg 34 shows date as 20 Sept 1876], until the storm wrecked our home in 1915, which period of time is about 37 years we maintained the fence around the 16 acres and farmed the land and paid taxes thereon. When we moved away from the place in 1915, we moved about two miles east of the 16 acres to a place owned by my second husband, Alfred Simms, where we now reside. During the time from 1915 until now [10 July 1923], the fence has been maintained around the 16 acres and we have farmed it from time to time and paid taxes thereon and there have never been any adverse claims by anyone. Hiram Toran, my first husband, was buried in the grave yard of Silas Toran, which is located about two miles east of Wallisville on the Wallisville-Turtle Bayou road."
