The third son of John and Sarah (Eaton) Talkington, and twin brother of Lula Ann Talkington, Luther grew up in TX and OK, living in 1900 in the Choctaw Nation in Indiana Territory. He learned the art of farming from his father and older brothers.

Luther became a cotton farmer in Jackson Co., OK as a young adult and married Alia B. Speer about 1925. Following Luther's death in 1931, Alta Talkington married John Spiva in 1933.
