James "Jim" Steelman, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather, passed away in Raleigh on Friday, April 9, 2021 following a lengthy illness.

He is survived by his son, Mark (Diane); daughter Becky Durocher (Allan); grandchildren Erica Durocher, Stacie Durocher, and Stephanie Durocher; and great-grandchildren Rhett, Raylee, and Ruby. He was preceded in death by his wife Nancy; sisters Olene Trivette, Edith Dobbins, Lola Davis, and Betty Crews; older brother Bill; and his parents, Joe and Elma Cass Steelman.

Raised by Christian parents on a small farm in Yadkin County, NC, his background gave him an incentive to get an agricultural degree from NC State University. He married Nancy Caveness of Raleigh during his senior year at NCSU, and after graduating in 1954, reported for military duty at Fort Lee, VA. After finishing the Army's Mess Officer School, he transferred to Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville, Alabama and served there for 18 months. Once his military service was completed, he accepted a job with Swift and Company in Chicago. He spent eleven years with them before transferring to Wayne Feed Company, serving as advertising manager for the Dairy and Range Cattle Feeds.

Seeking warmer weather, Jim moved to Laurinburg, NC in 1972 to join McNair Seed Company. Eventually, he set up his own advertising agency before moving to Raleigh and merging it with Percivall Advertising. Ultimately, he wanted to return to full time selling, and did this for SE Farm Press until his retirement in 2004. Following his wife's death in 2009, he resided in various independent and assisted living facilities in Raleigh, and enjoyed the activities and company of the close friends he made.

Some of Jim's fondest memories involve his farm background, his military service, gardening, grilling steaks, working with farmers, family reunions, vacations in Myrtle Beach, his service with the Raleigh Optimist Club, love of his wife and family, and the achievements of his children and grand-children. He committed to attending church and worshiping everywhere he lived, and was especially appreciative of the wonderful care and fellowship he received from members and Sunday School teachers at Trinity Baptist Church.

The family would like to thank his dedicated care team at the Oaks at Whitaker Glen, and Dr. William Dunlap and Transitions LifeCare, for the compassionate help and comfort they provided to Jim during the last year of his life.

Friends and family are invited to a small graveside service at Raleigh Memorial Park (7501 Glenwood Avenue) at 1:30 pm on Monday, April 12, 2021. Mask wearing and social distancing requirements will be observed.

In lieu of flowers, please send memorials to Trinity Baptist Church, 4815 Six Forks Road, Raleigh, North Carolina 27609, or Transitions LifeCare, 250 Hospice Circle, Raleigh, North Carolina 27607.
