Extended Illness is Ended
David H. Estes Succumbs to Grim Reaper After Protracted Siege of Sickness

David H. Estes, one of the pioneer citizens of Sykesville, having lived here all of his life, died at his residence at about 5:30 yesterday evening, after an illness covering a period of several years. A complication of diseases difficult to diagnose and to deal with confined Mr. Estes to his bed for many months and gradually wasted away until his final dissolution, death being apparently near on several previous occasions.
Deceased would have been 66 years old on the 12th of next August. He was married three times and is survived by five married children of his first marriage. Of his second marriage one child was born and died in infancy. His third marriage was about 14 years ago to Savilla Shadle, who with 3 small children of this union, also survive.
Deceased was of a retiring, home-loving disposition, but was nevertheless, a man who took much interest in the community, was a member of the school board and treasurer of that body until recently, and was a director of the Sykesville National Bank. He was a member of the firm of Estes & Long, but retired from active business about two years ago. He owned and had interest in considerable local property.
Inability at present to secure more complete date, compels us to defer a more adequate sketch of his life until our next issue.
Funeral services will be conducted from Bethel Baptist Church, of which deceased was a prominent and influential member, next Sunday afternoon at two o'clock.

David H. Estes, son of Abraham and Margaret Estes, was born on the farm now occupied by S.C. Estes, on August 12, 1846, died at his residence in this place on July 11, 1912.

Deceased was three times married. His first marriage was to Susanna Zufall, of Sykesville, and the following children survive from this union: Mrs. Sinetta Card, Mrs. Hannah M. Daucett, Mrs. Anna C. May and Mrs. Mary E. Steele, all of Seattle, Wash., and Amos R., of Endicott, N.Y.

Mr. Estes' second marriage was on April 28, 1892, to Nannie J. Moore, of Sykesville. One child born of this union died in infancy.

On Sept. 8, 1898, Mr. Estes was married to Lillie Aravilla Shadle, of Brookville, and to this union were born the following, who survive: LaRue, Adelaide and George.

Much of Mr. Estes' life was spent in lumbering, after which, for 15 years, he was engaged in the mercantile business at this place as senior partner in the firm of Estes & Long. He was compelled to retire from active business a couple of years ago, owing to failing health.

Mr. Estes was a member of the Reformed church for 30 years before joining the local Baptist church seven years ago. He was a deacon in the latter congregation.

He was a member of the I.O.O.F., K. of P., P.O.S of A, and Golden Seal lodges and was insured in the Mt. Pealier Life Ins. Co.

Mr. Estes became a member of W.C. No. 456, P.O.S. of A., at the time of its institution, Aug. 2, 1889, being also installed as the first treasurer of the camp on that date, which office he filled until Jan. 1912, sickness preventing further continuance in office. He also served as a member and treasurer of the local school board and as a director of the First National Bank of Sykesville.

Funeral services were held last Sunday afternoon at 2:00 and were very largely attended. The lodges of which deceased was a member escorted the body to Bethel church, where the services were conducted by Rev. L. B. Underwood, who preached an appropriate sermon. Special music was rendered by the choir and the floral offerings were beautiful and numerous.

Following the ceremony the procession wended its way to the Sykesville cemetery, where interment was made.
