According to Howard Zellers, Laura's nephew, Laura's birth date of November 23, 1876 was established by an affidavit made by her sister, Marguerite. This took place on Nov. 15, 1948 before the 19th Judicial Circuit Deputy Attorney of the State of Indiana.

However, a search of the records at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Girardville show the birth and baptism's of all of John and Mary Joyce Malarkey's children, except for Catherine and Marguerite, who were baptised in Ashland. Laura isn't listed in the records in either church, but there is a Bridgett, born to John Mullarkey and Mary Joyce on October 23, 1876. Could this be Lauretta? Since there is no official record of her birth, could Marguerite have made a mistake when she said Lauretta was born in November? It seems likely, as the 1880 Census lists a Bridgett with the family, but Laura isn't listed. (And she should have been.)

With this in mind, I was in a quandary was to what to use for her birthdate. I've decided to put the month that she used during her life, which is November. but, please understand, the real month was October!
