I'm Richard Ariel Hardy, born in Oakley, Idaho, March 11, 1946, the second child of Ariel Eldon Hardy and LaVaun "Bonnie" Smith Hardy. In many ways, my life ended on January 3, 2014, the day my angel wife, Janis, died. She knew she was going and wrote some of her own obituary. I decided to do the same. Men in my family die of heart attacks, so I may not have any warning, so I'm writing this in 2018. I have always been driven (much to the chagrin of my family) to be prepared.
I died at the end of my battle with prostate and brain cancer on March 27, 2021, at the age of seventy-five, in Lindon, Utah. Janis and I leave behind five amazing, resilient, faithful children: Jennifer (Cameron) May, Sam (Lois) Hardy, Amber (Tony) Sweney, Molly (Steve) Bohman, and Aaron (Holly) Hardy, along with 13 beautiful grandchildren. Equally loved are my sister, Sheryl Wood and my brother Randy (Karlene) Hardy.
I did a few things right in my life and a whole lot wrong; but I got one thing right when I married Janis Merrell on August 18, 1971 in the Mesa Arizona Temple, and that made all the difference.
The obligatory resume: Grew up on a farm in Oakley, Idaho, a fact for which I will forever be grateful. Graduated from Oakley High School (1964). Served an LDS mission to Central America (Honduras, Costa Rica, Panama, 1965-1967). Graduated from BYU in Electronics Engineering Technology (1971). Worked at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in Livermore, California (1971-1972). Ran a computer business in Burley, Idaho while we raised our children in Oakley (1973-2001). Ran the gamut of LDS Church callings. Moved to Pleasant Grove, Utah in 2001. Worked for JMC Global and Ancestry.com. Served online as a senior missionary for the LDS church. And, yes, after 25 years of preparation, ran the Boston Marathon at the age of 65.
I have been extremely blessed with a noble heritage, good parents, a wonderful wife, great posterity and many good and faithful friends. As a family, we've had our struggles, but mostly unavoidable health problems. I have an unwavering testimony of the gospel of Jesus Christ and know that these trials are for our benefit and growth. My years without Janis have given me a chance to grow and try to catch up with her.
As she exhorted our grandchildren before she died, "Love one another and keep the faith." She also insisted it's not "Good-bye" but rather "See you later." Don't mourn for me. For me, "later" has finally arrived and we are together again. See you later.
Funeral services will be held Monday, April 12, 2021 at 11:00 am in the Battlecreek First Ward chapel, 1250 E 200 S, Pleasant Grove, Utah. Family and friends may attend a viewing from 9:30 – 10:45 am prior to the services. Masks, hand sanitizing, and social distancing will be requested.
