My Aunt Vannie was born in Little Prairie Township, Pemiscot County, Missouri to Joseph Robert and Lily Levanna Williams Price. She was the second child and only girl of nine children of whom only six lived to adulthood. My Uncle Bill, her older brother named her. Grandma said, "what should we name her, Bill?" He said, "Baney Bater." And so, she was named Vaney LeVater. It was a story she liked to tell.

Since she was the only girl, she said she was not allowed to go anywhere alone. There always had to be a little brother tagging along to keep an eye out for her. It did not help with dating. As she said, she did very little as a result. She ended up married to a widower almost twice her age. Everyone thought he was a good catch because he owned some property. She only had one child with that marriage, her only child despite 3 marriages. Her husband Otis Hinchey had children from his first marriage and did not want others. So, he told the doctor to "fix it" so they had no more. In that day and age, husbands got away with that sort of behavior. After Otis died, Aunt Vannie and her daughter Shirley Jean moved to Michigan. She worked in the factories up there as did many women while the men were away at War.

Aunt Vannie was more like a grandmother than an aunt. She was that much older than my dad born in 1924. She was always very loving and caring to all her brothers and nieces and nephews. I loved her very much, and still do to this day. She was a wonderful cook. I loved her buttermilk pie the best, I think! But anything she cooked could be counted on to be delicious!
