Calvin Coolidge Deming
May 30, 1925 ~ March 25, 2021 (age 95)

Calvin Coolidge Deming, age 95 of Boyne City, Michigan passed through the gates of Heaven at the Hiland Cottage. He was the 7th child of Maude (Webster) and Silas Deming.

Cal left high school to join the United States Marines and served our country in WWII. He then returned to finish his high school education, and he graduated in 1945 from Boyne City High School. His heart’s desire was to become a state trooper, and after his graduation he took the test for the State Police, passing the test with a high score, only to be told he was two inches too short. So, then he went on to join the Maritime service. After his time there, Cal joined the Browning Steamship Company, sailing on the freighters until 1955, when he then was transferred to the Bob-Lo boat which ran from Detroit to Bob-Lo Island. Cal was first mate on the Ste. Claire. In 1962 Cal returned to Boyne City and started working for Memcor (now Honeywell) where he was a machinist, and tool and die maker. He retired in 1988 after 25 years of service. He was held in high esteem at the plant and was sorely missed when he left.

In 1955 on September 10, Cal and Helen Schmidt were married at Boyne City United Methodist Church. They have four children: Timothy, Kevin, Craig, and Lynn.

Cal loved to fish and to hunt. After his retirement he took up the hobby of making fishing lures, spuds, and spears. Many people in Boyne City have pieces of his fine craft, as well as many all over the country.

Cal is survived by his wife Helen; son Kevin Deming, son Craig (Darlene) Deming, and daughter Lynn (Michael) Shaw; nine grandchildren: Jason Deming, Liane Deming, Barbie Deming, Stephanie Deming, Mandy Deming, Alicia (Deming) Cole, Chad Deming, Kaitlan Deming, and Niki Shaw; 10 great-grandchildren; sister Florence Kominski; and many nieces and nephews who all loved him dearly.

He is preceded in death by his parents Maude (Towne) and Silas Deming; brothers: Ronald, Ralph and Albert; sisters: Edith, Cora, Mary, Joanne, and Barbara; and his beloved son Timothy Allen Deming.

Those wishing to make a charitable donation in Cal’s memory are asked to consider the Veterans Association or McLaren Hospice.

A private family service will be on April 1, 2021 at the United Methodist Church in Boyne City. A celebration of life will be announced at a later date.

Arrangements are in the care of Stackus Funeral Home.
