-- Catherine Seals in the Indiana, U.S., Marriage Index, 1800-1941
Name: Catherine Seals
Spouse Name: Andrew E Basinger
Marriage Date: 19 Aug 1888
Marriage County: Perry

In January 1897, Catherine filed for divorce from Ed Basinger. Ed was in jail for the charge of murder of Emery Miles of which he was sentenced to four years at the reformatory in Jeffersonville, Indiana, but the sentenced was reduced to only two years under a new law.
May 27, 1897, Catherine Basinger v. Ed Basinger, case continued. Ed was still in jail waiting trial.
Divorce granted and in 1905 Ed remarried again to Melissa Caravile in Tell City. It wasn't long before Ed was in trouble with the law again in Perry County, Indiana. In 1907 he was charged with hitting Holly Laflin over the head with the intent to kill and then pointing a pistol at Marshal Ed Hawkins after participating in a riot in Perry County which killed William Dafford. Shortly after, he forfeited his bond and "skipped out." Samuel Basinger was his bondman. A few months later, Ed was found in Kentucky working on a section gang at the railroad there. The case was discharged on the grounds of lack of evidence. He was subsequently acquitted of the assault of Holly Laflin because he said he only hit her on the head with a metal bucket and not the hatchet that Holly claimed.
