Mary Ann Baldassaro, Age 70, of Independence, KS died on May 21, 2020 at her home.

Mary Ann was born on January 27, 1950 in Topeka, KS to Frank Lopez and Mary (Ortega) Lopez. She grew up in Independence and graduated from Independence High School in 1968. She then attended St. Francis School of Nursing graduating in 1971 as a registered nurse. Later in life she earned a bachelor's degree in nursing from Pittsburg State University.

On June 27, 1971 she enlisted in the United States Army as a Lieutenant. She was first stationed at Ft. Bliss, Texas, El Paso where she met her future husband Mike. Mary Ann then volunteered for Vietnam and was stationed at Saigon Army Hospital until the war ended in March, 1973.

On May 31, 1975 she married Mike Baldassaro in Atlanta, GA. In 1977 the couple relocated to Mary Ann's hometown of Independence. On October 23, 1982 they celebrated their sacramental marriage at St. Andrew Catholic Church.

Mary Ann worked as a nurse for numerous physician practices and also held administrative jobs. She retired in 2014.

She lived a life of great service centered on her Christian faith. She continually expressed a strong reliance on the work of the Lord with sincere devotion to her family and friends. Mary Ann possessed a strong leadership style considered by many as remarkable. She was a lifelong member of St. Andrew Catholic Church and the Altar Society and was an innovator and leader in many catholic ministries.

Mary Ann is survived by her husband Mike of the home in Independence, KS; two sons, Ryan Baldassaro and wife Johna of Carthage, MO, and Ross Baldassaro and wife Sarah of Mission, KS; two sisters, Frances Lickteig and husband Jim of Cherryvale, KS and Marta Thompson and husband Chris of Independence, KS; two brothers, Adam Lopez and wife Cindy and Mark Lopez both of Independence, KS; five grandchildren, Isabel, James, Holland, Alex and Miriam Baldassaro.

She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, Mario Lopez.

Cremation has taken place.

Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday, June 1, 2020 at 10:00am at St. Andrew Catholic Church in Independence. Graveside services will follow.
