HISTORICAL NOTE: According to Nancy Backus Mills the family name was actually spelled Backous but Walter did not like the way people pronounced it here in American so he dropped the "o". He also added "E" as a middle initial although he did not originally have a middle name.
Walter married Laura Eugenia Bell 20 Aug 1918 and they had a family of three children: Kathry Aleta, Marvin Lyle and Nancy Jo.

Backus, 90, of 801 Eigth St., Altoona, who died Saturday of a heart attack at Veterans Administration Medical Center, will be at 9 a.m. Wednesday at Hamilton's Funeral Home. Burial will be in Highland Memory Gardens Cemetery. Mr. Backus was born in England and had lived in the Altoona area since 1942. He was a retired contractor. Survivors include a daughter, Nancy Mills of Cumming; a son, Marvin L. Backus of Des Moines; eight grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Friends may call from 6 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home."
Walter and Laura are buried in Reverence Garden, lot 72. The garden is located in Highland Memory Gardens east of the central drive and features a statue of Christ and his disciple, Simon Peter.
