Born at sea, taken by his parents to England and brought up and educated there and in Paris. Rebuilt the Elms house, which had been burnt after his father's death, and entertained the Marquis de LaFayette there on his second visit to America.
He married first Emma Philadelphia Middleton (dau of Arthur Middleton) who died 1 May 1813.
He married second Claudia Smith
