She was Mrs. LeRoy F. Baker but later appears on correspondence as Mrs. Bird. Her maternal great aunt was Emma Maria Petford Buckley. Sarah A. Bellows is possibly a great great aunt.

During WWII, she lived in Brunswick, Georgia and exchanged letters with a young soldier, William Peter "Willie" Mitchell. Willie had worked for her at the Wesley Inn Hotel in Brunswick, Georgia.
